    Armegeddon games Night
Look, mostly new words! Please RSVP in comments, I can't do polls here these days.

The world is ending on saturday, and the best way to spend our last night on earth would be, gaming at Chez Turtle. No, really, this is it, the big one, we're all going to die. Worldwide earthquakes followed by the rapture. http://blogs.wsj.com/speakeasy/2011/05/18/a-brief-history-of-the-end-of-time/?mod=google_news_blog I am thinking maybe Pillars of the Earth, Zombie State, Pandemic, Pompeii, and any... other apocalyptic games people care to bring. I think maybe one last slice of pie, some nice wine, and late night revelry.

Doors open at 7. Bring your dinner and sit down with us for a meal. Dinner is between 7 and 8, then the kitchen table turns into a games table. Games can start as people show up. When we have 4 people, we can start a game. If you show up after 8:15 or so, you may end up waiting a while for the first round of games to end so you can fit into a game. What do you feel like playing? Suggest a game.

You are welcome to bring food, snacks, beverages, etc. One of the hosts, and at least one of our guests, is limited to gluten free foods. You don't have to bring gluten free, but if you do, it will be appreciated. Wine and cider are popular with our guests, beer is not. Rasberries and strawberries are much beloved, blueberries, not so much.

Parking Reminder: Park in the marked spaces if you intend to stay past 1am. Park on the side of the street that does not have no parking signs if you do park on the street.

Critter alert: We have cats and a dog. If you are allergic to either type of critter, this is your early warning. Allergy induced fatal medical adventures are against the house rules.

Remember, the world may end saturday. Wear clean underwear.

Have we really not posted Games Night here on LJ for that long? :)
I see the last Games Night post here as January? That's strange!  I know we've been using FB more recently, but wow. :)

    Anyway...

    Heads up -

Paul's not feeling well today. Probably allergies, but it's possible that he has a cold or something else that could be communicable. Also, we may end up needing to call it an early night if neither of us is able to stay up late enough for late games. :)

We might have to cancel altogether if he continues to feel worse during the day today. I will let everyone know if we have to cancel tonight.

The holiday season is now over and it's back to normal, so, games night!

Bring a friend, our group needs new faces! Bring chips, bring berries, bring soda, bring cupcakes, bring beer and wine, and gluten free cookies. Doors open at 6, a special early start for the... holiday! Games can start as people show up. When we have 4 people, we can start a game.I would like to start trying to shuffle people into games earlier, rather than clustering in a small area talking loudly. If you show up after 8:15 or so, you may end up waiting a while for the first round of games to end so you can fit into a game. What do you feel like playing? Suggest a game.

Parking Reminder: Park in the marked spaces if you intend to stay past 1am. Park on the side of the street that does not have no parking signs if you do park on the street.

    Never grope a cantelope.

    Ho Ho Holiday Games Night

I know many of you will be busy with Christmas eve activities, but for those who aren't we will be hosting games, just as we would on any other friday night. Madison will be looking forward to seeing what santa brought her in the morning.

    Online specialty game stores

Per request from yesterday's game night, a note about online game stores.

When ordering online, most are drawn to FunAgain's website because it's the biggest and flashiest. They're actually one of the most expensive online US specialty game stores, with both shipping costs and free shipping price points ($150) in the upper range of costliness across the net.

For online game store alternatives, try these for better value:

    * Miniature Market: They most often have the best prices, frequently undercutting competitors, even if it's sometimes only by pennies. Their logo even advertises "Lowest prices on the net!" They also have the lowest threshold for free shipping, which occurs at $75. From personal experience, their service is fast, reliable, and just as good quality as other stores. Their shipping for single items is an average $7-9 (example used: Betrayal at House on the Hill). A drawback is that they keep low inventory stocks so you encounter "Sold Out" a little more often than at other sites.

    * Cool Stuff, Inc.: They have very low prices, too. However, they also have a deeper inventory, wider selection, and a frequent-customer rewards program where you get larger and larger bonus discounts the more aggregate business you give them. If you've bought more than $500 from them over the lifetime of your account, for example, you get a bonus 2.5% off on all future board game purchases, and 8% off cards & minis. Their price point for free shipping is $100 and their service quality is high. A drawback is that their shipping for single items is high, at over $10 (example used: Betrayal at House on the Hill).

    * Other competitively-priced sites include Boards & Bits and Troll & Toad, but I've found their inventories and shipping costs are not as good as the ones above.

Lastly, you can easily compare prices between many online game stores with a very no-frills, convenient site: Board Game Prices. Plug in the name of the game you're shopping for and it'll spit out all the online stores, national and international, that offer it. Their data is sometimes a little old, but never by much. Make sure you factor in the shipping costs when choosing a venue based on a low price for a given game - it may not be the best price with s&h factored in. For best results, try to save up a list and order over the free shipping threshold for a site.

    Games Night

Last time, I posted this to my journal, not chez turtle. Oops. But that tells me some of you aren't reading my journal as often as you read this. Interesting. Anyway, last minute games night post. Games night is on. It's a go. Never any doubt.

Games Night! Shall we play a game? Some of you have been missing for a while, maybe this would be a good week to come back for a game. We are new and improved, with less sodium and flavor crystals, aged in wood and optomised for more efficient operations. I suspect we may see Battlestar once again, along with perhaps Tigris, or Domain, along with whatever people happen to bring with them.

Bring a friend, our group needs new faces! Bring chips, bring berries, bring soda, bring cupcakes, bring beer and wine, and gluten free cookies. Doors open at 7, earlier if give me a shout and let me know you are on the way. Games can start as people show up. November 13th - National Gaming Day @ Rust Library (Leesburg)

So apparently November 13th is National Gaming Day, being celebrated at over 1800 libraries nationwide. Leesburg's Rust Library is participating. According to the documentation, if you contact the library, they may let you host some board game events there. I don't have the time, but if someone else wants to...

    Games Night!

I posted not games night until this now, here, for this week. In other words, the LJ games night post is so late as to be the next best thing to pointless. But I am posting it, just so that if you do see it, you will know that yes, we are having games night as usual, so go ahead and show up as usual anytime after 6:59pm. After 8pm is late, but that's ok, show up late if that's when you show up.

Look at games night announcements from previous weeks for details, here's the poll.
